Battle of Chantilly

Chantilly (Ox Hill), Fairfax County, Virginia, USA

What happened

Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops fought two Union divisions under Philip Kearny and Isaac Stevens, part of John Pope's army. After losing the Second Battle of Bull Run, Pope's Union army was retreating toward Washington. Jackson tried to get around it and cut it off near Ox Hill. The fighting took place in a severe thunderstorm that soaked the soldiers' ammunition, and the Confederate attacks were stopped.

Why it matters

Neither side clearly won the fighting, but according to the National Park Service it was a Confederate victory because Pope's army kept retreating. It was the last battle of the Northern Virginia campaign.

What came next

Pope pulled back to Washington, his army was merged into McClellan's, and Lee turned north into Maryland on 4 September.

Did you know?

The battle is named after Chantilly Plantation, which stood near a rise called Ox Hill.
