Battle of Cesenatico

Cesenatico, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

What happened

About 600 Austrian hussars and jägers under Major Pirquet attacked a Neapolitan garrison of about 3,000. Murat's army was retreating toward Ancona. In the evening, the small Austrian force rushed the town's only stone bridge and fought its way into Cesenatico, taking 200 prisoners.

Why it matters

It was a minor fight, but a much smaller force beat a larger one. It happened while Murat's army was in retreat.

What came next

When the rest of the Austrian advance guard arrived the next day, the Neapolitans had already left in the night.

Did you know?

The garrison outnumbered the attackers about five to one.
