Battle of Castel di Sangro
Castel di Sangro, Abruzzo, Italy
What happened
An Austrian advance guard of Hungarian hussars and Tyrolean jägers caught a Neapolitan division in retreat. After the defeat at Tolentino, one Neapolitan division split from Murat's army and retreated south. The Austrians caught it at Castel di Sangro. The Neapolitans formed squares, but the hussars broke them and the division was scattered.
Why it matters
It was a small battle as Murat's army fell apart. An Italian study later called it 'a forgotten battle'.
What came next
The next fight was at San Germano, which ended the war.
Did you know?
The Neapolitan division had shrunk to under 2,000 men before the battle.
