Battle of Callantsoog
Callantsoog, North Holland, Netherlands
What happened
A British force under Ralph Abercromby, with ships under Adam Duncan, landed against Batavian (Dutch) troops under Herman Willem Daendels. British soldiers came ashore by boat near Callantsoog. The Batavian troops, spread out along the coast, fought back, but sand dunes blocked their horses and guns. By evening Daendels withdrew.
Why it matters
The British won a foothold, and the naval base at Den Helder fell without a fight.
What came next
Three days later the Batavian fleet surrendered without firing a shot. The British then held off an attack at Krabbendam.
Did you know?
Before leaving, the Batavians spiked 86 guns in the Den Helder batteries so the British could not use them.
