Battle of Bornhöved (1813)
Bornhöved, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
What happened
Against orders, the Swedish hussars charged. They broke the Danish rearguard of Polish lancers, then hit the main Danish force at Bornhöved as evening fell, forcing it to retreat.
Why it matters
It was one of the last battles ever fought between Swedish and Danish forces. Who won is disputed, according to Danish and Swedish accounts.
What came next
The Swedes chased the Danes for several days. Three days later the Danes won at Sehested, and the war ended with the Treaty of Kiel.
Did you know?
The Swedish regiment later carried 'Bornhöft 1813' as a battle honour on its standard.
