Battle of Beaugency
Beaugency, Loiret, France
What happened
The English gave up the town on the first day and withdrew into the castle, which the French shelled. Arthur de Richemont arrived with 1,000 more men. When the French heard an English relief army was coming, they agreed to let the English leave safely if they surrendered.
Why it matters
The French regained the town and its bridge, a vital supply route for their summer campaign and the crowning of Charles VII.
What came next
The next day the French won at Patay, opening the way to Reims and Paris.
Did you know?
Joan of Arc accepted Richemont's help even though he was out of favour with the king.
