Battle of Baugé
Baugé, Anjou, France
What happened
A French and Scottish army under John Stewart, Earl of Buchan, and Gilbert de La Fayette faced an English force under Thomas, Duke of Clarence. During the Hundred Years' War, Clarence's men were raiding Anjou. When the Franco-Scottish army arrived, Clarence attacked before his archers had joined him. A small Scottish force held a bridge long enough for the main army to form up, and Clarence fell; the Earl of Salisbury later brought up the archers and led the English survivors away.
Why it matters
It was a major English defeat in the Hundred Years' War. It raised the reputation of the Scottish army in France.
What came next
Buchan was made Constable of France, commander of the French army. In 1424 the English won a decisive victory at Verneuil, where Buchan fell.

After the battle, the Scottish leader Archibald Douglas was given a French title, Count of Longueville.
