Battle of Batin

Batin, Bulgaria

What happened

A Russian army under Nikolay Kamensky fought a larger Ottoman army. Russian infantry attacked uphill toward the Ottoman camp, but the attack stalled. Kamensky sent cavalry round to strike from behind, and the confusion let the main attack succeed. The Russians took the camp, its commander and its guns.

Why it matters

It let the Russian campaign in the Balkans go on unhindered. Kamensky could return to the siege of Rousse (Ruse).

What came next

Rousse fell to the Russians that September. Kamensky fell ill early in 1811 and died that spring.

Did you know?

Muhtar Pasha, son of the famous Ali Pasha of Ioannina, escaped with his Albanian cavalry.
