Battle of Athos
Aegean Sea, between Mount Athos and Lemnos
What happened
A Russian fleet under Dmitry Senyavin fought an Ottoman fleet under Kapudan Pasha Seydi Ali. Senyavin lured the Ottoman fleet out of the Dardanelles and caught it near the island of Lemnos. The Russians attacked the Ottoman line, and the fighting went on into the next day as the Turks tried to break away. Several Ottoman ships were captured or run aground, and the Russians lost none.
Why it matters
It ended the Ottoman navy's efforts to break the Russian hold on the Dardanelles in this war.
What came next
Days later the Treaties of Tilsit ordered Senyavin's fleet home to the Baltic.
