Battle of Alcoraz

Huesca, Aragon, Spain

What happened

Peter I was besieging Huesca, a siege his father had begun. Al-Musta'in II marched to rescue the city. On the fields of Alcoraz, between the walls of Huesca and the castle of Montearagón, Peter's army defeated the relief force.

Why it matters

Less than two weeks later Huesca surrendered, and the King of Aragon moved his capital there. The battle's emblem, the Cross of Alcoraz, later became part of the flag of Aragon.

What came next

The Cross of Alcoraz became a royal coat of arms of Aragon.

Did you know?

According to later legend, Saint George appeared over the Aragonese army; a chapel in Huesca remembers the battle.
