Battle of Adwalton Moor

Adwalton, near Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, UK

What happened

Newcastle's army advanced toward Bradford, and the two armies met by chance on an old Roman road at Adwalton. The Parliamentarians pushed forward at first, but a Royalist counterattack broke their left wing. Sir Thomas Fairfax's wing was cut off and retreated.

Why it matters

It gave the Royalists control of Yorkshire and left Hull as Parliament's only northern stronghold. This pushed Parliament into an alliance with Scotland.

What came next

Newcastle took Bradford, Leeds was given up, and the Parliamentarians withdrew to Hull. A year later Parliament won at Marston Moor.

Did you know?

Historic England ranks its importance second only to Marston Moor.
