Battle of Abensberg
Abensberg, Bavaria, Germany
What happened
Austria had invaded Bavaria, Napoleon's ally. Napoleon ordered a push south-east, with French troops striking from the north and Bavarian and Württemberg troops attacking across the Abens River. The Austrian units were split up and cut off, and thousands were captured.
Why it matters
Why it matters: It separated the Austrian left wing from Archduke Charles's main army. The two Austrian wings then had to fight separately.
What came next
Hiller fought at Landshut the next day, and Charles fought at Eckmühl on 21–22 April.
Did you know?
Archduke Charles gave no orders that day from late morning to evening; the page suggests he may have been ill.
