Armistice of Salonica
Thessaloniki, Greece
What happened
After the Allied breakthrough on the Macedonian front, Bulgaria asked for peace. The armistice was signed late at night at the Allied army headquarters in Thessaloniki. Bulgaria had to stop fighting at once, leave Greek and Serbian land it had occupied, and send German and Austro-Hungarian troops out of the country within four weeks.
Why it matters
It ended Bulgaria's part in the First World War. The same day, Germany's army leaders told the Kaiser that the war could not be won.
What came next
Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire soon asked for armistices too, and the Treaty of Neuilly made the final peace with Bulgaria in November 1919.
Did you know?
The ceasefire took effect at noon on 30 September 1918, the day after signing.
