Armistice of Mudanya
Mudanya, Bursa Province, Turkey
What happened
After Turkish forces won the war against Greece in Anatolia, talks were held in an old Ottoman building in the seaside town of Mudanya. The armistice said Greek troops would leave Eastern Thrace within 15 days, and Turkey would take over its government 30 days after that. It avoided a new war over the neutral zone near the Straits.
Why it matters
It brought the fighting to an end and put Eastern Thrace under Turkish control. It led directly to the peace talks at Lausanne.
What came next
The Conference of Lausanne began in November 1922 and produced the Treaty of Lausanne in July 1923.
Did you know?
Mustafa Kemal Pasha himself proposed Mudanya as the meeting place.
